Afternoon Tea Week takes place from 11–17 August 2026, making it the perfect excuse to indulge in one of Britain’s best-loved traditions. Whether you prefer a classic afternoon tea with delicate sandwiches, cakes and pastries or simply can’t resist a freshly baked cream tea with warm scones, clotted cream and jam, there’s no shortage of wonderful places to enjoy the occasion.
We’re lucky to have some fantastic cafés and tea rooms right on our doorstep, so we’ve rounded up five of our favourite spots near Cheddar. From historic tea rooms and palace gardens to charming village cafés, each offers something a little different for your Afternoon Tea Week treat.
Set in the heart of Cheddar Gorge next to the famous Original Cheddar Cheese Company, Café Gorge is an award-winning café with beautiful views of the surrounding cliffs. It’s a fantastic stop whether you’ve been exploring the gorge, shopping for local cheese or simply fancy a leisurely afternoon. Alongside light lunches and homemade cakes, their traditional cream tea is a real treat, and the café welcomes walkers, cyclists and even well-behaved dogs
Nestled beneath the iconic Lion Rock in the heart of Cheddar Gorge, Lion Rock Tea Rooms has been welcoming visitors since 1908. This award-winning, family-run tea room is known for its loose-leaf teas, homemade cream teas and traditional afternoon teas, all served in a choice of cosy, characterful rooms or the secluded garden during the warmer months. Whether you’re stopping after a walk through the gorge or planning a special afternoon out, it’s easy to see why Lion Rock remains one of Somerset’s favourite tea rooms. It is also dog friendly!
Set within the stunning grounds of The Bishop’s Palace, The Bishop’s Table is one of the most picturesque places to enjoy afternoon tea in Somerset. Overlooking the croquet lawn and surrounded by more than 14 acres of beautiful gardens, the award-winning café serves homemade dishes using locally sourced ingredients in a beautiful historic setting. Whether you choose a traditional afternoon tea, coffee and cake or a light lunch, it’s the perfect place to relax after exploring the medieval Palace and the beautiful city of Wells. Well-behaved dogs are welcome too, making it a great stop for the whole family.
Housed in a beautiful 15th-century almshouse overlooking Axbridge’s historic market square, The Almshouse Tea Shop is full of charm and character. This family-run tea shop is known for its freshly made afternoon teas, homemade cakes and fluffy scones, with seating both inside the historic building and outside in the square on sunny days. There’s even a small independent bookshop to browse while you visit, making it an ideal place to slow down and enjoy a relaxing afternoon in one of Somerset’s prettiest towns.
One of the newest additions to Wedmore, Grove Wedmore offers a fresh, welcoming space to enjoy coffee, homemade bakes and light bites. If you’re looking for a more contemporary café experience during Afternoon Tea Week, it’s a lovely spot to relax and catch up with friends in the heart of this charming Somerset village.
