There’s nothing quite like popping out your picnic blanket under the sun, unwrapping delicious local bites, and enjoying the fresh air.
With International Picnic Day on the horizon (June 18), we’re sharing our top local picnic spots – plus where to grab the best treats and why our very own park might just be the perfect place to set up!
Cheddar Gorge – just a 5 minute drive from us. (1-2 hour moderate to difficult climb).
The gorge offers plenty of picturesque picnic spots, from the green park conveniently located partway up the gorge, to the summit where you can enjoy breath-taking views of the landscape below. You’ll also find a number of picnic benches scattered in and around Cheddar, perfect for soaking up the charm of this scenic village.
Deer Leap – just a 10 minute drive from us. (1-2 hour moderate climb).
With panoramic views over the Somerset Levels, this walk starts from the small Deer Leap car park. A gate leads straight onto the footpath, offering sweeping vistas that are especially beautiful on a sunny day. There are several public footpaths to choose from, so it’s easy to tailor the walk to suit your group, whether you’re after a gentle stroll or something a little longer. From the first field, you can either head downhill into the nature reserves or follow the path up the sloping hillside for more elevated views.
KingsWood – just a 10 minute drive from us. (15 minute easy climb to first view point).
King’s Wood is a beautiful stretch of ancient woodland cared for by the National Trust, nestled in the Mendip Hills near Axbridge and Winscombe. It’s a scenic and peaceful walk that can easily be extended to take in the Strawberry Line or the striking views from Crook Peak. Begin at the small car park just off Winscombe Hill. From there, head through the gate into the woodland, which in spring comes alive with a lush carpet of wild garlic — a truly magical sight.
Chew Valley Lakes – just a 15 minute drive from us. (as long and difficult as you like!)
You can lay out your picnic blanket wherever you please, making this one of the more accessible and relaxed spots. But it’s also worth mentioning the circular walk — a fantastic all-rounder that takes you through open countryside and up to a hilltop with stunning views over Chew Valley Lake. Halfway through, stop for fish and chips at Salt & Malt, or end your walk at The Pelican pub, which also makes a great starting point for the route.
The Strawberry Line – just a 5 minute drive from us. (as long and difficult as you like!)
The Strawberry Line is an 11-mile, mostly traffic-free path that runs from Shepton Mallet to Yatton, passing through Wells and Cheddar along the way. It follows much of the former Cheddar Valley Railway line, which once connected Yatton to Cheddar and Wells. The route later earned the name “The Strawberry Line” thanks to the large quantities of locally grown strawberries it transported to markets in London.
